TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — Investigators in Tuscarawas County are trying to piece together a disturbing case that involves an entire family. A father and his 4-year old are dead. The wife and mother is in the hospital.

According to investigators, the family is Amish and was visiting Atwood Lake over the weekend from Holmes County. According to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff, at about 10:40 Saturday morning, the mother deliberately drove a golf cart off a dock at Atwood Lake with her three teenage children on board, including a 15-year-old daughter and twin 18-year-old sons.

The woman’s 15-year-old daughter and twin 18-year-old sons were able to get out of the water on their own. However, after talking with the mother and children, responding units became concerned for the safety of a four-year-old son and the woman’s husband, who could not be located, a media release stated.

“After helping the woman out of the water, the woman made concerning statements about conversing with God,” stated the release.

The father had been seen by a witness at a different boat dock around 1 a.m. In the search of that area, divers recovered the body of the four-year-old Saturday evening, and then Sunday morning found the 45-year-old father’s body.

The mother is in the hospital for mental health concerns. The three teenagers are with other family members.

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff plans to hold a news conference at 2 p.m. on Monday.
