What disturbances are in the Atlantic basin?

There are several tropical distrurbances in the Atlantic basin as of early Monday, Aug. 25.

Tropical Storm Fernand

  • Status: Strengthening, but likely won’t reach hurricane status.

  • Movement: North-northeast over open waters in the central Atlantic.

  • Threat to land: No threat to the United States; poses no hazard to land.

  • Forecast: Expected to move over cooler waters within 48 hours and become post-tropical.

Invest 99L

  • In the eastern Caribbean with near-zero chances of developing further in the next seven days.

Tropical Waves

  • There also are three other tropical waves in the Atlantic basin: two in the eastern Atlantic and another in the northwestern Caribbean. Monitoring continues.

Will Tropical Storm Fernand become a hurricane?

Tropical Storm Fernand is expected to strengthen Aug. 25 but will likely fall short of becoming a hurricane.

It's expected to move over cold water within the next 48 hours and become post-tropical.

Is Tropical Storm Fernand a threat to Texas or the United States?

Fernand is moving north-northeast over open waters in the central Atlantic and poses no threat to the United States.

Where is the Atlantic basin?

The Atlantic basin refers to the part of the Atlantic Ocean where tropical storms and hurricanes form and move. It generally includes:

  • The Atlantic Ocean itself (from the west coast of Africa to the eastern U.S. coast)

  • The Gulf of Mexico, renamed to the Gulf of America through an executive order by President Donald Trump

  • The Caribbean Sea

When is hurricane season?

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with the busiest period from August through mid-October. The peak typically occurs around Sept. 10.
