A suspected car thief remains at large after a bizarre high-speed pursuit. The man driving the car, which was reported stolen, stopped at a gas station during the chase, fueled up and then took off again. According to a report by ABC 7 News, the suspect eventually ditched the car and escaped police.

The events unfolded on Friday night around the Los Angeles area. At about 10 PM, a dark blue Infiniti Q50 that had been reported stolen was spotted by police. A chase ensued with speeds reaching 100 mph. In addition to speeding, the suspect reportedly weaved in and out of traffic and even drove on the shoulder in his attempts to escape.

In the interest of public safety, the police eventually pulled back and broke off the pursuit. However, a news helicopter remained and stayed with the suspect. The driver then pulled into a nearby gas station to refuel. He pulled his shirt over his face as he refueled. During his entire fuel stop, the feed does not show police anywhere nearby. The man could have potentially just walked away at this point.

The suspect did not simply walk away, however. He got back into his car and jumped back onto the freeway and resumed driving erratically. At this point, as if a time out had just ended, the police engaged the pursuit again.

Once again, as the speeds increased, the police backed off. The suspect eventually abandoned the car under the 10 Freeway overpass at Alameda Street. As the car rolled into a light pole, the suspect took off on foot. Whether he was picked up by another car, acquired another car through less-than-legal means, or simply walked out of the picture, he was spotted again.
