FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A University of Arkansas student and a restaurant worker react to the response of an active shooter on campus on Aug. 25 that law enforcement now believes to be a hoax.

Sophomore Mia Conley was in the Bell Engineering Hall when she and her classmates received the terrifying alert.

Conley says the classroom was filled with panic. Their professor locked the doors and barricaded the students inside to keep them safe.

“We were stuck in a building, no windows, so we couldn’t really see what was going on or anything, but I could hear the sirens pass because my classroom was right off Dickson Street. So, there were a lot of cop cars continuously passing by from what I could hear,” Conley said.

Businesses saw a flood of students as they evacuated from campus. Madi Taglauer, an employee at Spoon on Dickson Street, said she saw several police cars drive by after a customer informed her of an active shooter response.

Taglauer says she notified the owners of Spoon and was willing to help even when she was shaken up herself.

“I was kind of scared. I started to feel a little bit shaky. Never been in a situation like this before, but I was honestly just thinking, ‘What do I need to do to keep myself and other people safe?’ And so, I was just asking if there were things that I could do to help people or anything. If they needed anything before they left.” said Taglauer.

Law enforcement believes the calls of an active shooter were a hoax. University of Arkansas Police say there is no record of shots being fired.
