MISSOURI — WalletHub recently released a new study analyzing the teen driving environment of all 50 states to help spread awareness of the personal and financial risk of teen traffic accidents.
WalletHub ranked each state based on 23 metrics in three categories: teen driving safety, economic environment and strength of driving laws.
Out of all 50 states, WalletHub ranked Missouri second-to-last for teen drivers, only ahead of Montana.

Missouri was ranked dead last in the driving laws category, 47th in the teen driver safety category and 40th in the economic environment category. In key metrics, Missouri ranked among the bottom 10 in teen driver fatalities per 100,000 teens, presence of impaired and distracted driving laws, quality of roads and vehicle miles traveled per capita.
The top five states for teen drivers, according to WalletHub, are New York, Oregon, New Jersey, West Virginia and Kentucky.
WalletHub says car crashes are the leading cause of death for 16 to 19-year-olds. They also say crashes involving teens who are 13 to 19 years old lead to an annual cost of around $40.7 billion in medical bills and lost productivity.
