General Motors (NYSE:GM), the popular automaker announced another major safety recall, this time involving more than 23,500 Chevrolet Corvettes in the U.S. due to a potential fire risk.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said fuel could spill into the pocket around the gas cap during refueling, possibly leaking onto hot engine or exhaust components and igniting. Four fires have already been linked to the defect, though two involved malfunctioning gas station pumps. Dealers will fix the issue by installing shields to divert spilled fuel.
The recall impacts Corvette models from 2023 through 2025, as well as 2026 Coupe and Convertible versions. While only about 0.1% of the vehicles are estimated to have the defect, the news is another blow to GM's reputation after a string of recalls this year.
In June, GM recalled over 62,000 vehicles over brake issues, while April's global recall affected more than 700,000 SUVs and trucks. The wave of safety problems comes as the auto industry grapples with tariff pressures and weaker consumer demand.
