Electric vehicles have come a long way, from niche tech experiments to mainstream contenders. But for many drivers still weighing the switch, one lingering question remains: Will an EV actually save me money? With higher upfront costs and ongoing debates about electricity versus gas savings, it’s a fair concern, especially when compared to the value-packed gas-powered vehicles that still dominate the market.
Without federal or state incentives, the financial case for EVs can feel shaky. However, Mercury Insurance has just added a new data point to the conversation. Some electric vehicles are now rolling in with lower insurance premiums, offering a potential long-term advantage in ownership costs.
As automakers refine their electric offerings, these 10 models stand out in terms of green credentials as well as for their affordability where it counts. If you're EV-curious yet cost-conscious, this list might help tip the scales.
EV Insurance That Saves Green

In August 2025, Mercury Insurance shared the 10 electric vehicles from 2025 and 2026 that have the most affordable insurance. Director of Product Management R&D, Chong Gao, said he is aware that EVs are "considered expensive to purchase" in general. Still, the ones on this list could even "lower your insurance costs" depending on what you currently pay. According to Mercury, insurance cost factors include the cost of repairs, vehicle safety records, and claims made on similar vehicles by other customers. Therefore, these EVs are generally considered safe, reliable, and cost-effective to maintain compared to other EVs.
"With federal EV tax credits set to expire in the near future, now is the time to get into an EV for consumers who are interested in one," said Gao. "That's why this year's list is especially timely and relevant. These EVs are great choices for consumers who are looking to save on the total cost of car ownership equation."

1. Chevrolet Blazer EV

The Chevrolet Blazer EV isn't just making waves for its sleek styling and impressive 320-mile range: it's also winning hearts at insurance companies nationwide. With Mercury Insurance ranking it as the most affordable EV to insure, with average annual insurance costs of just $1,668, this midsize electric SUV proves that you can keep your own green while going green. The Blazer EV's insurance-friendly reputation stems from its robust safety features, including GM's comprehensive Super Cruise driver assistance technology and a sturdy steel construction that keeps both you and your wallet safe.
What makes the Blazer EV such an insurance darling? Beyond its impressive safety ratings, this electric crossover benefits from Chevy's widespread service network, making repairs more accessible and affordable when accidents do happen. The vehicle's relatively mainstream positioning means its parts aren't as exotic or expensive as those of some luxury EV alternatives, and its proven Ultium battery platform has established a track record that insurers trust.
Plus, with GM's commitment to keeping repair costs reasonable, you won't need to sell a kidney when it's time to fix a fender bender – though with all those advanced safety systems, hopefully, you won't need to worry about that anyway.
Your kidneys are safe with the Blazer EV. (This isn't GM's official promise, but we are pretty confident.)
2. Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Chevrolet Equinox EV is like that responsible friend who always has their life together – they may not want to go on an expensive drinking binge all night, but they're still surprisingly fun to be around. Ranking as the second most affordable EV to insure according to Mercury Insurance's 2025 study, this compact electric SUV proves that you don't need to sacrifice style or substance to keep insurance premiums low. With a starting price under $35,000 and a range of up to 319 miles, the Equinox EV offers the perfect blend of practicality and efficiency that both families and insurance companies appreciate.
The secret to the Equinox EV's insurance appeal lies in its thoughtful engineering and GM's focus on repairability. The vehicle features a conventional SUV design that doesn't require specialized tools or exotic materials for most repairs, keeping costs down when claims arise.
Additionally, the Equinox EV's comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, helps prevent accidents before they happen – and insurers love vehicles that actively work to avoid claims. It's like having a designated driver built right into your car, except this one runs on electricity and doesn't ask you to Venmo them for half the gas.
3. Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is the seasoned veteran of the EV world, and like a wise old sage, it's learned all the tricks to keep insurance costs low. With rates starting as low as $130 per month and full coverage averaging around $1,400 annually, the Leaf has mastered the art of being affordable both upfront and in the long term. This pioneering electric hatchback has been around since 2010, giving it the kind of established track record that makes insurance underwriters feel as comfortable as a cat in a sunbeam.
The Leaf's insurance advantages go beyond its modest pricing and proven reliability. As one of the more affordable electric cars in terms of both list price and average insurance premiums, it benefits from widespread availability of parts and service, plus a decade-plus of claims data that insurers can analyze. The car's compact size and lower performance envelope compared to sportier EVs mean it's less likely to be involved in high-speed incidents.
At the same time, its advanced safety features and solid construction provide excellent protection in the event of an accident. Sure, it might not have the flashy looks of newer EVs, but when your insurance bill arrives, you'll be grinning like you just found a twenty-dollar bill in an old coat pocket.
4. Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV is like the Swiss Army knife of electric vehicles: compact, versatile, and surprisingly capable of handling whatever life throws at it, all while keeping insurance costs refreshingly reasonable. This crossover-styled EV combines Kia's reputation for value with electric efficiency, delivering up to 253 miles of range in a package that insurance companies find as appealing as a perfectly organized spreadsheet. The Niro EV's insurance-friendly nature stems from its conservative design approach and Kia's commitment to safety, earning it top ratings from safety organizations and the admiration of actuaries everywhere.
What really makes the Niro EV shine in the insurance department is its practical approach to electric mobility. Unlike some EVs that push performance boundaries, the Niro EV focuses on efficiency and everyday usability, which translates to lower risk profiles and reduced claim frequencies. The vehicle's moderate power output and emphasis on family-friendly features mean it's more likely to be driven responsibly. At the same time, Kia's excellent warranty coverage provides additional peace of mind for both owners and insurers.
Plus, with Kia's expanding service network and commitment to keeping repair costs reasonable, the Niro EV proves that being sensible can be somewhat stylish – and affordable to insure.
5. Ford F-150 Lightning

The Ford F-150 Lightning is proof that even America's best-selling truck can learn some new tricks – like how to keep insurance costs surprisingly manageable while still hauling your boat to the lake. With an average insurance cost of $251 per month, the Lightning actually costs $6 less each month to insure than its gasoline counterpart, making it a rare example of an electric vehicle that's actually cheaper to insure than its gas-powered sibling. This full-size electric pickup maintains all the capability truck owners demand while adding the kind of advanced safety technology that makes insurance companies break out in happy tears. But will it be enough to convince your neighbor, who has used their truck to haul stuff a total of two times, to switch to an electric vehicle?
The Lightning's insurance appeal stems from Ford's wise decision to keep the electric truck's design and construction methods as similar as possible to those of the regular F-150. Ford deliberately kept the design conventional to help with repair costs and familiarity, meaning most body shops can work on it without needing specialized training or exotic parts. The truck's massive battery pack is well-protected and integrated into the frame structure, reducing the likelihood of expensive battery damage in minor accidents.
Plus, with features like Pro Power Onboard turning your truck into a mobile generator, you might find yourself so self-sufficient that you'll forget what insurance claims even are, at least until you try to tow 10,000 pounds up a mountain pass.
6. Hyundai Kona EV

The Hyundai Kona EV is like that overachieving student who somehow manages to ace every test while still having time for extracurricular activities – except in this case, the "activities" include keeping insurance premiums low and delivering up to 258 miles of electric range. This subcompact SUV punches well above its weight class in terms of features and capability, while maintaining the kind of modest profile that insurance underwriters find absolutely irresistible. The Kona EV's combination of advanced safety features, solid construction, and Hyundai's reputation for reliability creates the perfect storm of insurance affordability.
Rather than chasing maximum acceleration or top speed, Hyundai focused on creating a well-rounded electric vehicle that emphasizes safety and practicality, which is a key consideration for insurance companies. The result is a car that's less likely to be driven aggressively and more likely to be used for sensible daily transportation – precisely the kind of usage pattern that keeps claim frequencies low. Add in Hyundai's excellent warranty coverage and growing service network, and you've got a vehicle that combines the excitement of electric driving with the insurance costs of a responsible adult who always returns their library books on time.
7. MINI Cooper SE

If you thought that EVs were lacking in personality, you haven't met the MINI Cooper SE yet. It has an immense amount of cuteness packed into its tiny body, from its large, round headlights to its rotund, friendly shape. You'll find yourself having a lot of fun zipping around in this little guy - and you'll save on insurance rates while doing it. This pint-sized electric hot hatch proves that you don't have to sacrifice character or driving excitement to achieve affordable insurance. With its compact dimensions, moderate power output, and MINI's focus on premium safety features, the Cooper SE occupies a sweet spot that both enthusiasts and insurance companies can appreciate.
The Cooper SE's insurance advantages extend beyond its small size and lower repair costs. MINI's position as BMW's premium small car brand means the vehicle benefits from advanced safety technology and high-quality construction. However, its limited range of approximately 114 miles tends to keep it in urban environments, where speeds are lower and accidents tend to be less severe. The car's unique position in the market also means it attracts mature, responsible buyers who appreciate its blend of efficiency and fun – the kind of drivers who use their turn signals religiously and never even think about racing motorcycles at stoplights.
Plus, when you're having this much fun driving a car that costs this little to insure, every trip feels like you're getting away with something delightfully sneaky.
8. Hyundai IONIQ EV (All Models)

The Hyundai IONIQ family represents the overachiever of the electric vehicle world, with models that consistently earn gold stars from both automotive journalists and insurance actuaries alike. Each model in the IONIQ range benefits from Hyundai's advanced Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which not only delivers impressive performance and efficiency but also incorporates safety features that make risk assessors positively giddy with delight.
What sets the IONIQ models apart in the insurance game is their combination of cutting-edge technology and practical sensibility. These vehicles feature impressive tech capabilities, including ultra-fast charging and sophisticated driver assistance systems, while maintaining a responsible design philosophy that keeps repair costs manageable and safety ratings high. The IONIQ 5's innovative Vehicle-to-Load capability even lets you power your camping trip or emergency backup needs, making it so valuable that you might find yourself wondering why you ever needed to file insurance claims in the first place. Additionally, with Hyundai's industry-leading warranty coverage backing its electric ambitions, both owners and insurers can rest assured knowing they're covered by a company that stands behind its innovative technology.
9. Fiat 500e

Here's another little cutie that is adorable, fun, and affordable. It has a lighthearted and European flair that brings la dolce vita to the EV world, proving that style and affordability can coexist harmoniously in a package smaller than most SUVs' cargo areas. With its compact dimensions, moderate performance, and focus on urban mobility, the 500e creates the perfect recipe for insurance companies to fall head over heels in love.
The 500e's insurance appeal stems from its honest approach to electric transportation – it knows exactly what it is and excels within those parameters. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, this little Italian charmer focuses on being the perfect city companion, with a range suited for urban adventures and power delivery that prioritizes efficiency over tire-smoking acceleration. The result is a vehicle that's inherently low-risk from an insurance perspective, while still delivering enough personality to make every commute feel like a mini vacation to the Mediterranean. When your biggest worry is finding a parking space small enough to show off your parallel parking skills, insurance claims tend to become a distant concern, just like your stress levels after switching from a gas-guzzling SUV to this electric ray of sunshine.
As a Miata owner, maybe this will be what finally breaks me and brings me into the world of EVs. (Especially after hearing it's cheap to insure.)
10. Subaru Solterra/Toyota BZ4X

The Subaru Solterra and Toyota BZ4X are the automotive equivalent of that reliable couple who always bring the perfect dish to the potluck – dependable, thoughtfully prepared, and appreciated by everyone, including insurance companies who love their conservative approach to electric mobility. These twin electric SUVs, born from the partnership between two brands famous for safety and reliability, represent a measured entry into the EV space that prioritizes practicality and longevity over flashy performance numbers. With all-wheel drive standard, impressive ground clearance, and the engineering philosophies that made both brands household names, these vehicles offer the kind of steady competence that makes actuaries smile.
What makes the Solterra and BZ4X particularly attractive to insurers is their emphasis on proven technology and conservative engineering. Rather than chasing cutting-edge performance or experimental features, both vehicles focus on delivering solid, dependable electric transportation with the safety features and build quality that both Subaru and Toyota are known for. The result is a pair of EVs that are more likely to spend their time safely transporting families than testing the limits of adhesion on twisty back roads.
Plus, with extensive dealer networks from both brands ensuring accessible service and reasonable repair costs, these vehicles offer the kind of long-term value proposition that makes insurance companies as happy as a golden retriever with a tennis ball. Sometimes, the most exciting thing about a car is how utterly unexciting it makes your insurance renewal process.
Who doesn't love a good lasagna?
Will 2025 Be the Year?

Will 2025 be the year you switch to an EV? It seems increasingly likely, given lists like these.
I previously ranted about how electric vehicles had no soul, largely due to their repetitive and lifeless designs. But look at these 10 vehicles: adorable little guys with big eyes, aggressive SUVs with glaring headlights, chunky trucks ready to tackle trails... No comment on the plastic-clad Subaru Solterra... Still, these are vehicles with personality—and it doesn't come at a crazy price tag. Some of these cars are even cheaper to insure than your current gas-powered vehicle! This leaves me to ask this question yet again: What is our excuse now? What are the reasons not to switch over?
I'm running out.
