GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning released its annual crash data Tuesday, which shows a troubling trend for roadway users.
“In 2024, vulnerable roadway users experienced profound increases in crashes and/or fatalities from 2023,” the release stated.
Bicyclist-involved crashes totaled 1,773, a 20% increase, and bicyclist deaths also rose 21%. School bus-involved crashes rose 6% from year over year to a total of 1,044 crashes statewide and work zone-involved deaths are up 17%.
“While all crashes are alarming, the sharp rise in bicycle-related incidents and work-zone fatalities highlight the ongoing vulnerability of certain roadway users,” wrote Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police. “We must work with the public to raise awareness, promote safe driving and focus on these ongoing issues to ensure everyone’s safety in addition to enforcing traffic violations.”
Teenage driver deaths also rose to 77, a 17% increase.
