Masterson, Davids, comment on idea of Kansas redistricting

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — We’re getting more reaction to the idea of Kansas redrawing its congressional maps prior to the midterm elections in 2026.

At least three states are looking to change their lines as Kansas Democrats wonder whether the Republican led legislature will follow the lead of Texas and Missouri. In an interview with FOX4 Tuesday, Democratic Congresswoman Sharice Davids said she’s aware of the idea.

Trump says ‘Missouri is now IN,’ hinting toward mid-decade redistricting

“But really my biggest concern has to do with the way that our federal policies are impacting Kansans,” she said. “There are so many things on our plates that my hope would be that the Kansas legislature is spending time thinking about, ‘How is Kansas going to navigate the loss of Medicaid funding? What are we going to do about the nutrition assistance programs that so many people depend on?'”

Davids won reelection in November of 2022 after state leaders redrew her district and split up Wyandotte County, changing the voter demographic to lean more Republican. Davids actually increased her margin from a 10% victory over Amanda Adkins in 2020 to a 12% victory over her in 2022 though. Davids beat Republican Dr. Prasanth Reddy by 10% in 2024.

Thursday, FOX4 talked to Kansas Senate President and Republican 2026 gubernatorial candidate Ty Masterson.

“I’d just have to see what the plan is,” Masterson said when asked if President Trump wanted to endorse him, would he consider another redistricting plan. “It would be disconnected from whether or not he endorses me… I mean, that’d feel a little quid pro quo. Would I like to get the endorsement? Great. Do I think I’m the most like him when it comes to just kind of ‘bold government?’ Yes, but ultimately that’s a decision for them to make, and I’ll take the redistricting debate at face value. I’ll see what they’re thinking about, and we’ll go from there.”

Davids is planning to run for reelection in 2026. At this time, there are no Republicans who have made their candidacy public in the Kansas 3rd Congressional District.
