Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Tuesday that the only members of the Democratic Party resonating with audiences and raising funds “are the socialists.”
“The only Democrats out there that are resonating and getting money are the socialists,” McCarthy said on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom.”
McCarthy’s comments come amid the rise of left-wing Democratic stars such as New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and Minneapolis mayoral candidate Omar Fateh.
Mamdani’s upset victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo also came alongside wider ongoing discussions about the direction of the party.
In the wake of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss in November’s presidential election, progressives were blamed by more moderate Democrats for adding to a perception of the party as leaning too far leftward.
“Every time I think they’re going to right the ship, they go backwards a little further. They’re further down today than they were with the election. I think if the election was reheld today, President Trump would win by a bigger margin. It’s unbelievable,” McCarthy said on “America’s Newsroom.”
Mamdani is set to compete with both Cuomo and current New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the mayoral race, who have both identified as Democrats before but are running as independents.
