There’s been considerable talk about Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull for greener pastures, but it seems for now he’ll stay put. The Dutch Formula One driver could have potentially gotten out of his contract with the team ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, but he’s instead stayed on and reportedly will remain put for the 2026 season.

When Christian Horner was dismissed from the team, speculation abounded about the reasons behind the decision. Many fingers pointed at Verstappen and his father since there’s been tension between them and the former team principal.

At the same time, rumors of Verstappen’s exit from the team mid-season ramped up. Supposedly, he was considering a jump to Mercedes.

But that’s all but gone now, as ESPN reports Max Verstappen is comfortably in third place, keeping him from slipping into fourth. His contract allowed him to get out if he was in fourth or worse come the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, but that’s not even mathematically possible now.

While that’s bad news for George Russell, it’s also good news. The British F1 driver has been highly critical of Verstappen this season. Some believe it’s because he felt threatened by the man, thanks to the rumors of the Dutch driver possibly displacing him.

So, in a way, Russell’s failure to secure third place overall by this point has in fact secured his seat at Mercedes, at least until the end of the season.

However, with plenty of talk of shuffling after this season, it’s possible Russell will be looking for a new team as he’s revealed there has been no contract for the 2026 season presented to him by team principal Toto Wolff.
