Two rounds of steady rainfall are expected to make an appearance across central and eastern Kansas starting Tuesday night and again late Wednesday evening.

Wichita meteorologists are warning of potential heavy rainfall and flooding, especially following Wednesday night’s storm, and the possibility of isolated hail.

According to National Weather Service Wichita, showers will start Tuesday evening and last through Wednesday afternoon with a relatively low chance for heavy rainfall and flooding.

On Wednesday evening, another bout of thunderstorms are expected to last through Thursday morning. This second round, meteorologists warn, carries a better chance for widespread heavy rain and flooding, especially in Wichita, Hutchinson, Eureka and Chanute. Rain predictions estimate widespread rainfall amounts to reach 1 or 2 inches, with localized amounts possibly reaching 3 to 5 inches.

Isolated hail — ranging from dime to quarter size — is also possible Wednesday night.

While this week’s weather is not expected to be severe, National Weather Service Wichita advised that modest to significant rises in river and stream waters may occur, and those nearby should prepare accordingly. To avoid potential flash floods, get to higher ground, avoid driving or walking into flooded areas and monitor local forecasts for updates.
