Ed Sheeran has described his Aston Martin DB9, once a symbol of success in his early career, as his “worst purchase ever” after the luxury grand tourer left him stranded in floodwater near his home.

The singer recalled driving back from a studio session when he encountered a flooded country lane. Attempting to ease the six-figure DB9 through the rising water, Sheeran said the car stalled as the waterline climbed nearly to the windows. With no way to restart the V12-powered grand tourer, he abandoned the car on the roadside and walked home on foot. The Aston Martin was later recovered, but Sheeran admitted he never drove it again.
The DB9 was produced between 2004 and 2016 and became one of Aston Martin’s most recognizable models. With roughly 16,500 built, it was celebrated for its sleek styling, luxurious interior, and 5.9-liter V12 engine that offered both refinement and power. However, the low-slung design, like many performance cars, was never engineered for flooded conditions, making Sheeran’s breakdown less about a mechanical flaw and more about the car being used outside its intended environment.
For Sheeran, the experience permanently soured his connection with the DB9. What was once a milestone purchase representing his success quickly became a cautionary tale about the impracticalities of high-performance luxury cars in real-world conditions.
The episode underscores a broader reality: while cars like the DB9 are admired for craftsmanship and exclusivity, they are not designed to handle everyday hazards such as deep standing water. Aston Martin has since moved on with newer models like the DB11 and DB12, aimed at blending performance with improved reliability. But for Sheeran, the DB9 remains a reminder that not every dream purchase lives up to its promise.
