Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser gave an update Wednesday afternoon on the Trump administration’s takeover of local law enforcement, a day after President Trump floated the death penalty for those convicted of murder in the nation’s capital.
Bowser has pushed back on the show of force, citing crime data that shows offenses are at a 30-year low. The Justice Department launched an investigation into the numbers earlier this month, and Trump has threatened to expand the takeover, including the deployment of National Guard troops, beyond the 30 days allotted by law.
The president early Wednesday also suggested he was working with Republicans in Congress to push through a crime bill, as the administration eyes sending forces to other Democratic-run cities.
