A Southern California man accused of killing his wife and fleeing to Peru with their children surrendered Wednesday to authorities in the South American country, authorities said.

Peru’s national police force said Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo turned himself in to the Interpol headquarters in Lima and is being held in preventive detention.

Cabrera, 36, was wanted on one count of murder in the Aug. 10 death of Sheylla Cabrera, 33. The charge includes allegations that he used a knife as a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Video posted by Peruvian police showed him handcuffed, with an Interpol insignia on his shirt.

It is expected to take several months to extradite Cabrera to the United States, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Their three children were found Aug. 16 in Peru and taken into protective custody, the sheriff’s department said last week.

In a statement, District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the allegations against Cabrera as “horrific” and said domestic violence “creates chaos in our communities and shatters families. My office is committed to bringing stability back into the lives of those who have been victimized.”

The prosecutor’s office alleged that Cabrera killed his wife Aug. 10 at their home in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, before he fled to Peru with their children.

Sheylla Cabrera was reported missing Aug. 12. Her body was found the next day in Angeles National Forest, according to the sheriff’s department.

Security video released by authorities showed Cabrera dragging what the sheriff’s department described as “a large object in a large piece of material” from their apartment complex.

Sheylla Cabrera’s body was found in similar material, the sheriff’s department said.
