Erieites already know what a gem they have in Presque Isle State Park. Now the New York Times has introduced its readers to the beauty of the Erie County peninsula's beaches.

An August story on the New York Times website by Frugal Traveler columnist Elaine Glusac features two photos of Presque Isle and lists the Pennsylvania state park as the only Lake Erie destination among six Great Lakes sites that "offer some of the best sandy stretches for families."

Presque Isle State Park's Beach 6 was mentioned in a New York Times story.

Why Presque Isle?

The New York Times story cites the seven miles of beach on the peninsula that arches into Lake Erie and highlights features of individual beaches, such as the sand volleyball courts at Beach 6, the ramp at Beach 7 and the calm water at Beach 11.

Other beaches

The story also features one destination each on Lakes Huron, Ontario and Superior and two on Lake Michigan.

Can I still swim at Presque Isle?

The swim season at the peninsula historically ran from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. In recent years, however, park officials have extended swimming, which is only allowed on guarded beaches, to include weekends in September after the holiday. Information on the end of the 2025 swimming season wasn't immediately available.
