FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Jewelry boutique store chain Claire’s is closing five stores in Arkansas after filing for bankruptcy earlier this month.

The fashion and jewelry chain aimed at teen girls filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Aug. 6 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Claire’s said in a court filing on Aug. 25 that nearly 300 locations would close, including 235 Claire’s locations and 56 Icing stores, which are more catered to adults.

The following locations in Arkansas are set to close:

  • Claire’s: Outlets Of Little Rock, Little Rock

  • Claire’s: Uptown Hot Springs, Hot Springs

  • Claire’s: Pinnacle Hills, Rogers

  • Claire’s: Lewis Crossing, Conway

  • Icing: Northwest Arkansas Mall, Fayetteville

Claire’s operates 12 stores in Arkansas. Stores in Fort Smith, Little Rock (Park Plaza location) and North Little Rock were on the “non-closing list.”

What were these Arkansas buildings before they turned into Spirit Halloween stores?

No information about the other four locations was available as of Thursday morning.

Details of when those closures are set to take place have not been released.

Claire’s said in a news release when it announced its bankruptcy filing that it could close more than 1,100 stores if a buyer did not emerge.

“This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire’s and its stakeholders,” Claire’s CEO Chris Cramer said on Aug. 6. “We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives.”

Claire’s joins a growing list of chains that have announced store closures over the last year. The list includes Joann, Big Lots and Party City.
