What appeared to be a routine traffic stop took a bizarre twist when a suspect tried to make a run for it. According to a video posted by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, a passing rideshare driver saw the cop running after the suspect and decided to give the officer a speed boost.
This is one of the more unusual police pursuits you are likely to see. The police video starts with officers talking to a suspect in a car that was pulled over. The suspect admits to having marijuana in the car. At that point one officer states that he wants to check the car to make sure there is nothing else inside.
The suspect gets out of the car and ignores police orders to leave a backpack in the car. The suspect instead throws the bag to another man that was already outside of the car. This second suspect scoops up the backpack and takes off on foot. The chase is on.
The officer’s bodycam footage shows him running after the suspect. The police decide to have a little fun with the video and overlay music from Mario Kart. The reason for this will become apparent in just a few moments.
A minivan driver who police describe as “the most legendary rideshare driver in history” pulls alongside the running cop and tells him to get into the van, whose side door has already been opened. Once the officer rolls up, it becomes clear that this driver has Mario Kart 8 playable in the backseat to keep passengers entertained. The cop has no time for playing games at the moment, but the option was available.
After a short ride in the minivan, the cop catches up to the suspect and hops out with his taser drawn. The suspect quickly surrenders. The rideshare driver asks the cop if he is good and the cop says he is and thanks the driver. The driver responds with “Glad I could help!” Unfortunately, none of the three had any time to stop and play Mario Kart.
