Summer is here and that calls for more trips to the beach, water park or your local public pool.
While driving to and from you may wonder: Is it illegal to drive barefoot? The answer may surprise you.
In all 50 states, it is not illegal to drive a vehicle barefoot. There are no federal or state laws prohibiting driving without shoes.
So if you’ve ever worried about being pulled over for driving shoeless, just know — you’re not breaking a traffic safety law.
And while driving barefoot is legal in the United States, that doesn’t mean it’s the safest option. The reason being is that it presents a number of potential hazardous risks.
According to Forbes, some of the risks of driving shoeless include:
Your bare feet could slip off the pedals more easily.
You’ll need to put more pressure on the pedals to accelerate and brake.
The pedals could be hot on bare feet.
In the event of an auto accident, if law enforcement officials believe that driving without shoes was a contributing factor, this could result in a citation for reckless driving and you being held legally liable for causing an accident.
Whether you drive with or without shoes is completely up to you. But make sure you’re making the choice with safety in mind.
