KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Improvements are coming to Front Street in Northeast Kansas City.
City leaders broke ground Wednesday to celebrate the start of the road project. Construction is already underway with the south lanes of Front Street currently closed for the next six months between Chouteau Trafficway and North Topping Avenue.

The city said crews will reconstruct the road and put in new curbs, storm sewers, sidewalks, medians and driveway aprons.
There are also plans to add a new water main, build new infrastructure to handle stormwater and install new street lights and traffic signals.
The Front Street project, Councilman Crispin Rea said, is expected to “completely transform this corridor moving forward.”
“Oftentimes our industrial areas are overlooked; however, this major investment is going to ensure that this economic corridor continues to be not only a safe place for the individuals who are participating in all of this economic activity, but that will hopefully also allow us to track more jobs and even more economic activity to the city,” Rea said during Wednesday’s event.

According to the website, the city received $7 million in STP funds for the construction. Local funds, including GO Bond and TIF, are also supporting the project.
Through-traffic will be maintained throughout construction, but some traffic delays are expected. The city is encouraging drivers to use detour routes during this time.
The reconstruction project is expected to be complete by September 2026.
