Lewis Hamilton Struggles With Ferrari’s Tweaks

After Sunday’s race at the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton revealed he struggled with several Ferrari tweaks. That’s apparently why he spun out entering the Bus Stop chicane on his final flying lap, ultimately starting in the pit lane while Charles Leclerc was in P3.

Hamilton’s struggles continued on Sunday, although he seemed to settle down more as the race continued, finishing in seventh place. That’s quite the feat considering he started in the eighteenth position.

But for fans who were expecting something miraculous this season as the seven-time world champ teamed up with the powerhouse team, such results are simply unacceptable.

Some blame Hamilton himself, saying the man is too old and has lost his touch. Others believe dysfunction inside Ferrari is the true reason for the driver’s struggles.

As for Hamilton, he indicated his troubles early in the weekend were due to several tweaks or changes Ferrari made at the last minute. While those hampered him at first, the Formula One driver made it clear he believes they will be a tremendous benefit in the long run.

The most mysterious and perhaps most dramatic change is a new performance engineer for Hamilton. Both he and Ferrari won’t reveal the identity of this new figure. He will only say he’s worked with the person before, presumably at Mercedes.

Speculation is this engineer went over to Ferrar for this season in another position and was promoted just this last week. Why the switch was made mid-season might be self-apparent, considering Hamilton’s struggles.

The other tweaks are an upgraded rear suspension, an area which has plagued Hamilton since the beginning of the season. But it was a brake characteristics shuffling that seemed to really throw the man for a loop. Leclerc did the same switch with the brakes in Canada and it seems the steep learning curve led to his notorious crash.

But Leclerc is arguably driving better now. Considering how Hamilton performed on Sunday, these tweaks might bear good fruit as he settles into the changes.
