KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man is facing charges in connection with a deadly shooting earlier this week.

According to court documents, Kansas City police officers were called to the area of East 18th Street and Prospect Avenue just after 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, for a shooting.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a witness who brought them to the area of East 18th Street and Benton Avenue, saying he had heard several gunshots near the area. Officers found a man unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead on the scene and was identified on Wednesday as 45-year-old Monroe Mitchell.

Detectives reviewed surveillance video from a nearby gas station, which showed a black car arriving and parking at the gas station. A man, investigators later identified as Burks, exited the car and entered the gas station. He walked around the store and left a short time later.

Another camera angle showed Mitchell falling down the hill near the gas station. Court records say Burks can then be seen walking up to him and firing multiple rounds at the victim, then leaving the scene.

Johnson said Burks is being held without bond.
