A C7 Corvette owner shot one would-be thief in the face as multiple suspects tried stealing his sports car. The incident, which shocked neighbors and triggered a swarm of police in the area, took place in Arlington Heights, a suburb northwest of Chicago.
Carjackings continue to be a problem in Baltimore.
Some neighbors were awoken around 3 am on July 25 to a car alarm, with others hearing the following gunshots or the police arriving in droves afterward. The other suspects took off on foot, reports ABC 7 Chicago, and remained at large.
While people said they were shocked such a thing would happen in their friendly little neighborhood, police had been recently warning about a rash of car thefts in the area. Oftentimes, theft rings will concentrate on a specific area for a while, then move on to another location.
In this case, the Corvette was parked outside in the driveway. Shattered glass on the cement indicates the thieves likely broke a window to gain entry, probably to then reprogram the ignition. However, an alarm alerted the owner to the meddling and he went out to confront the thieves while carrying his gun.
It’s unknown exactly what happened before the Corvette owner opened fire. It’s possible the would-be thieves pointed a gun at him first since they often carry weapons.
The man who was shot is expected to survive. His buddies have apparently been able to elude law enforcement, for now.
This incident serves as an excellent warning to clear out your garage enough to park your more desirable cars inside it at night. While that doesn’t guarantee thieves won’t break in, it does get vehicles out of sight and can help prevent theft attempts.
