What to know ahead of Kentucky’s 127 Yard Sale week

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (FOX 56) — Four days, six states, 690 miles. That is the fun that is in store for people, including right here in Kentucky, one week from today.

The 127 Yard Sale, running from Aug. 7 through Aug. 10, returns for its 38th year in 2025 and is expected to be bigger than ever.

This event is a little bit of everything. Starting in Jamestown, Tennessee, in 1987, it was meant to be a way to draw people off the interstates and bring them to more rural locations that people don’t really know about.

From selling virtually any item under the sun, food that will make your mouth water, and music that’ll have you dancing the night away, there is no shortage of fun to be had.

While most people are using this event to hunt down that elusive item for their collection, reps also say there is a great sense of community that comes with the annual tradition.

People from all over the country and the globe have participated, and it’s easy because all you need to do is drive.

“To see some of the huge locations, we call some of the major vendor stops because they have 25 or more vendors, all grouped together,” explained the director of media relations for the event, Josh Randall. “Some of them have up to like 300 vendors, and they’ll have food trucks and all that kind of stuff. But yeah, you can just get on the route and drive. There’s really no need to overplan. Some people, you know, they’re the planner types. They want to plan everything. You really don’t have to do that. You just get on the route and you’re going to see everything. You’re not going to miss that. We encourage people, especially for the first time, to just go experience it and don’t worry about, you know, how it’s all going to work out.”

Whether 2025 will be your first yard sale or your 38th, organizers have some advice that’ll ensure you and your family have the best experience possible.

For starters, just go with the flow. Randall said when you get too deep in the planning, it takes some of the fun out of the experience.

The second piece of advice is, if you plan on making this a multi-day affair and have lodging reservations along Route 127, don’t book your hotels too far from each other.

Randall said he’s heard from people too many times that they were rushing to make it to their hotel and didn’t get to do something they had wanted to.

The final tip: branching off point number two; soak it all in.

“Think of it more of an experience and not just like a shopping trip where you’re trying to find some specific item,” Randall said. “If you look at it that way and you take your time, you enjoy meeting people, you enjoy seeing the countryside—there are some really beautiful areas along this route. A good example is right at the first location in Gadsden, Alabama, is at Noccalula Falls Park, and there’s a beautiful waterfall there that has nothing to do, really, with the event, other than it just happens to be at that park. They let vendors set up inside the park, and that’s a beautiful location. So, you might want to take some time to go check out the waterfall before you move on to the next.”

There are several ‘Major Vendor Sites’ in Kentucky along Route 127; they are as follows:
