Chevy showed off earlier this year the first of three Corvette concepts it plans to introduce in 2025, revealing a sleek and muscular take on the iconic sports car. The second, just released on Thursday, is all-electric and perhaps just as sleek and muscular.
The Chevy California Corvette concept has massive 21-inch wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in the back, an active spoiler that’s is also an air brake, and a carbon tub. Chevy says the concept would be powered by a “T-shaped prismatic battery pack,” so the seats are lower to the ground and to optimize air flow. The company did not give power numbers and said explicitly the car would not be headed into production.

Instead, GM has been making these concepts as a chance for its design studios around the world to contribute ideas which may or may not be incorporated in future Corvettes—either the C9 or beyond. GM calls the California Corvette concept a “one-of-one hypercar.”
“We invited multiple GM studios to envision Corvette-inspired hypercars—the first of which was revealed by our U.K. studio in March,” Bryan Nesbitt, a GM vice president, said in a news release. “The California team has now delivered a complementary study that honors Corvette’s legendary performance, while infusing it with their own distinctive vision.”
Inside, there is a yoke instead of a steering wheel, and what GM calls a “minimalist” dashboard and interior, signalling that the concept would be intended for track use primarily. On the outside, perhaps the most dramatic feature is a “front-hinged canopy,” which is a removable single piece. That can convert the car from a closed-roof sports car to an open-top track beast. The feature was also partly inspired by the state of California.
“We wanted to ensure that this concept was developed through that SoCal lens, but with a global and futuristic outlook,” Brian Smith, a GM design director, said in a release. “Duality of purpose is the basis of this concept’s design strategy.”
Chevy did not give a price, because the California Corvette concept is never intended to be built, much less sold. But, as an exercise in design, it looks good and further points toward a future with an all-electric Corvette, even if EVs right now are out of fashion.
