Mercedes-AMG Previews New V8 Supercar Targeting Porsche 911 Performance Benchmark

Mercedes-AMG is preparing to launch a new high-performance V8 supercar aimed squarely at dethroning the Porsche 911 from its performance perch.

Dubbed internally as the "GT Track Sport," the upcoming model is being developed with a sharp focus on lap times, Nürburgring data, and dynamic performance. While full specifications remain closely guarded, early images and statements from Mercedes-AMG suggest the car will be powered by a revised version of the brand’s proven 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, the same unit found in the AMG GT63.

Unlike recent AMG electric prototypes, the GT Track Sport bucks the electrification trend and will rely solely on internal combustion. According to AMG executives, the choice reflects their continued investment in gasoline performance engineering—even as the broader market shifts toward EVs.

"This is about extracting every last ounce of potential from our V8 platform," one AMG engineer told reporters under condition of anonymity. "We know what our customers want, and they still want visceral, analog power."

Design cues reveal a car clearly prepped for the track: a large swan-neck rear wing, widened stance, extended front splitter, and sticky road-legal tires hint at serious aero development. Unlike Porsche’s center-lock wheels, the AMG uses a conventional five-lug pattern, suggesting a more street-accessible chassis despite its track focus.

Mercedes-AMG has a history of chasing Porsche lap times. Its previous GT Black Series set a blistering 6:48.0 lap at the Nürburgring, just shy of the 911 GT2 RS record of 6:43.3. The GT Track Sport is expected to surpass that, making it AMG’s most aggressive combustion-only supercar to date.

While a production timeline has not been announced, insiders speculate a late 2025 or early 2026 debut. For AMG enthusiasts, the message is clear: the V8 still roars.
