Minnesota Historical Society laying off 36 workers amid 'challenging economic environment' originally appeared on Bring Me The News.

The Minnesota Historical Society is laying off 7% of its workforce, citing rising expenses, revenue challenges, and changing visitor habits.

The cuts will impact 36 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees in the state. Workers impacted by the cuts have been given extended notice and a separation package, according to a news release.

“This is a painful time as we say goodbye to valued colleagues who contributed to our mission at the Minnesota Historical Society," MNHS CEO and Director Kent Whitworth said in a statement.

“Due to the challenging economic environment and changing visitor priorities, we must implement these organizational changes to continue our legacy of service to the people of Minnesota."

The Minnesota Historical Society operates 26 historic sites and museums across the state. Additional changes to the Minnesota Historical Society’s business model will impact the Charles Lindbergh House and Museum in Little Falls, Historic Forestville in Preston, and the Snake River Fur Post in Pine City.

Visitors will now have free, self-guided experiences at those destinations and occasional special programming, starting on September 1.

The Gale Family Library housed at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul will also begin using a new service model, and library patrons will be required to schedule appointments.
