SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) – The regents at Western New Mexico University have pulled the massive severance package given to its former president. Joseph Shepard received a $1.9 million payout after he resigned as president back in January.

Shepard had faced scrutiny after a state audit revealed university funds were misused for foreign trips and lavish furniture. The severance package also drew criticism, and the regents who approved it left their positions.
During a meeting on Thursday, the new board of regents voted unanimously that the severance was invalid because a December meeting violated the state’s open meeting laws.
