If you've ever driven a car without power brakes, you know just how much muscle it takes to bring your vehicle to a complete stop without some power assistance. Now, some Ford Bronco, Ranger, F-150, and Expedition owners, as well as select Lincoln Navigator owners, may have that nostalgic experience in the present day, as the Blue Oval issued a recall this week for 312,000 units over a faulty brake booster.

The recall, filed on July 28, 2025, covers certain 2025 Lincoln Navigator, F-150, Expedition, Bronco, and Ranger vehicles and is focused on the shared electronic brake booster module inside all these models. Ford says a total of 312,120 units are covered in the recall, but the filing claims only about one percent of the hundreds of thousands of trucks are estimated to be affected by the issue. For those who do experience it, however, the safety implications could be serious.

"The Electronic Brake Booster (EBB) module may enter into a faulted state while driving, resulting in a loss of brake boost until the EBB module completes a sleep cycle when the vehicle is off. This faulted state can also occur when the driver is utilizing an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) feature," the recall filing reads.

A complete failure of the electronic brake booster module means that drivers will be without power assistance, thereby increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash. The same stopping distance shortage applies if the ADAS system commands automatic emergency braking during an electronic brake booster failure. Ford says this problem is a result of normal but infrequent voltage disturbances that can momentarily cut power to the module inside the electronic brake booster. Traction control and ABS lights will illuminate on the dashboard should the system fail, Ford says.

This issue was first identified in May 2025, when the Expedition/Navigator Rapid Response Team (RRT) identified a vehicle exhibiting a loss of brake boost. This investigative team found numerous data points matching this loss of brake boost from other models between May and June 2025. While the brake boost didn't make the subject vehicles non-compliant with federal motor vehicle safety standards, Ford decided to issue a recall on July 18, 2025, out of an abundance of caution. The Dearborn-based automaker is aware of 37 warranty claims and one low-speed crash related to this issue.

The remedy is a simple one. Ford will first update the software on the electronic brake booster module over the air. If that doesn't solve the issue, Ford owners can also take their vehicles to a local dealership for an in-person software flash. While Ford wants to emphasize that this problem showing up is exceptionally rare, a loss of power-braking ability is certainly something that Ford truck and SUV owners should be on the lookout for.
