WEST PALM BEACH — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for South Florida today, warning that heat index temperatures today will be in the low 100s.
The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
While the actual temperature will reach 93 today, the “feels-like” heat index temperature is predicted to reach 107 in West Palm Beach, and 109 in Immokalee. The advisory is in effect for all of South Florida except for coastal Collier County and mainland Monroe County.
South Floridians are advised to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and to frequently hydrate, making sure to drink water before you are thirsty. Air conditioning is advised, as open windows and fans will not be enough to ward off the heat, and residents are encouraged to stay inside in a cool place if possible.
The area is under “major” risk for health complications with prolonged exposure to the heat. The heat index is an assessment of the apparent temperature when the actual temperature and high humidity combine, making it harder for the body to cool off and regulate itself. The current humidity is about 61%.
There is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms today and a 20% chance tonight. Winds are light, out of the south during the day and the southeast at night, at 5 to 9 mph. Rain chances rise to 50% Monday, but heat index temperatures of about 105 are expected again with actual temperatures in the low 90s, sunny skies and light winds.
