This 1966 Lamborghini 400 GT ‘Interim’ is considered by auction house Gooding Christie’s to be the “reference standard” for the model.

After three previous stewards from the time it was delivered new to the U.S., chassis No. 0517 has been owned by Robb Report’s automotive editor at large, Robert Ross, for 23 years.

The antithesis of the Italian automaker’s now signature styling ethos of angular aggression, this Lamborghini is more akin to Maranello’s grand tourers of the day, such as the Ferrari 330 GTC.

According to restorer Joseph DeMeo, the pristine, Senape-colored interior “needed next to nothing” when the car came to him.

The padded center console on the dash could double as an analog art installation.

Lamborghini’s 315 hp, 4.0-liter alloy V-12 engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission developed in-house by the marque.

“The car had really nice bones, but no one had ever really tended to it in a way to try and elevate it to its maximum potential,” says DeMeo of his two-year restoration project.

The car is adorned in bodywork by Carrozzeria Touring, as this badging denotes.

Chassis No. 0517 has been named Best of Show on several occasions, starting with the 2018 Hillsborough Concours, and was a contender at Pebble Beach in 2023.

The car carries a high-end estimate of $750,000.
