Lewis Hamilton Says Ferrari Should Fire Him

It’s been a frustrating Formula One season for Lewis Hamilton, but people were still shocked when he said Ferrari should fire him. His comment came after the qualifying during the Hungarian Grand Prix as Charles Leclerc shockingly grabbed pole position while Hamilton was in P12.

Ferrari has given Vasseur a multi-year contract.

Obviously upset at his lack of performance, Hamilton engaged in a level of self-criticism rarely seen from the seven-time world champion.

“It’s me every time. I’m useless, absolutely useless,” he said to reporters. “The team have no problem. You’ve seen the car’s on pole. So we probably need to change driver.”

One could argue if that’s what Hamilton is saying out loud, he’s telling himself even worse things in his head. And in sports, negative self-talk will wear you down, which could be why the man is struggling so badly.

After all, a lot of people thought the thing dragging Hamilton down was Mercedes and that the trade to Ferrari would result in something magical. But it seems the man is blaming himself, whether justifiably or not.

Ultimately, Lewis would go on to finish twelfth in the Hungarian GP while Leclerc would finish fourth. Not surprisingly, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished first and second, with George Russell muscling into third.

Max Verstappen finished ninth, showing Hamilton wasn’t the only one struggling.

While self-flagellation was Hamilton’s approach after the disappointing qualifying, his attitude seemed to have shifted by the end of the GP weekend.

Despite his not improving one position, he want on to say, “It’s been a challenging weekend and one to move on from. We weren’t able to make the progress we hoped for but I’m grateful for the effort everyone in the team put in throughout the weekend. Now we head into the break. I’ll be using the time to reset, recharge and come back stronger. I’m not where I want to be yet, but the fight’s not over - don’t count me out.”

That’s quite the attitude shift.

In the meantime, Charles Leclerc has this to say about his performance in Hungary: "It’s frustrating, because I think we could have won today, but we will return after the summer break and give it our all to come back stronger."
