Spider-Man Villain Confirmed To Return 8 Years Later, New Suit Teased for Brand New Day

Actor Michael Mando, widely known for portraying Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul, recently responded to the news of his return as Mac Gargan / Scorpion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and potentially teased Scorpion’s costume in the movie. Mando previously portrayed Gargan in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Mando took to Instagram after it was confirmed that he would return as Mac Gargan / Scorpion in Spider-Man Brand New Day and shared an image with his character’s scorpion tattoo. “St!ng #spiderman,” he wrote in the caption.

The actor also posted some updates about the project on Instagram Stories, including an image of a sign saying “St!ng” and a photo from the set of the movie. Additionally, he teased what Scorpion’s costume could be in Brand New Day.

Developed by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, MacDonald “Mac” Gargan made his Marvel Comics debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #19 in the ’60s. The character made his first appearance as Scorpion in the next issue. Since then, the suit has undergone several iterations. Mando shared the version from Leinil Francis Yu’s variant cover for a 2019 issue of Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales. The artwork shows Gargan as Scorpion and as Venom (there was a period in Marvel Comics when Gargan became the host of the symbiote).

Another post on Mando’s Instagram Stories features Hasbro’s Marvel Legends action figure inspired by Scorpion from Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998).

Mando’s social media updates come after it was confirmed via a report from THR that he would return in Brand New Day alongside Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner / The Hulk. Gargan briefly appeared in the main narrative of the Homecoming. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker / Spider-Man captures him, leading to his incarceration. In the mid-credits scene, Gargan reappears and asks Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes / Vulture about Spider-Man’s secret identity. There were rumors that Mando would appear in a potential Sinister Six project, but that didn’t happen.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2026.
