The Minnesota State Patrol will hire a third-party expert to evaluate the security of the Minnesota State Capitol complex following a recent security breach.

The agency began discussing an independent security assessment after the June 14 killings of state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and shootings of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Vance Boelter, 57, is facing federal and state charges in the case.

“We care deeply about creating a secure environment and are committed to learning from every incident to make sure people feel safe walking through those doors," Col. Christina Bogojevic, chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, said in a July 30 news release.

The agency is already conducting an internal review following a separate incident involving a person arrested July 25 after an alarm system alerted Capitol Security that someone was in the Capitol after hours.

“We know that the tragic events of June 14 and the security breach over the weekend at the Capitol have caused fear and concern – and we take that seriously,” Minnesota Department of Public Safety commissioner Bob Jacobson said in the news release. “We are committed to learning from recent events and putting better safeguards in place."

The state Department of Public Safety is also reviewing the law enforcement response to the June 14 shootings.

Jacobson said that any lessons learned from the Capitol assessment and other ongoing reviews could be used to "enhance security and improve communication systems, response protocols and collaboration."
