Germans are increasingly embracing electric cars, with data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showing 48,600 new electric vehicle registrations in July, up 58% from the same month last year.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 18.4% of new registrations in July, according to the KBA data, which was released on Tuesday.
The industry has experienced high demand throughout the year, following a significant drop in interest last year.
The Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK) counted more than 297,000 new BEV registrations between January and July 2025, an increase of 38.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
"We attribute the increase to the significantly larger range of vehicles in entry-level segments," said VDIK President Imelda Labbé.
"In recent months, a number of brands have introduced new models that are technically mature and, above all, affordable for a broad range of customers and users," she added.
Tesla, the US electric car giant, is not benefitting from this uptick in demand, selling just 1,100 new vehicles in Germany in July, more than 55% less than it did a year ago.
Around 264,802 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in July, some 11% more than in the same month last year.
The VDIK attributes this in part to lower registrations in July 2024, as a new EU approval regulation brought orders forward to June.
It said for June and July the passenger market was down 2.7% compared to the same period last year.
