A man reportedly — and miraculously — escaped serious injury when he lost control of his McLaren 720S during a rainstorm outside Munich, Germany last weekend. According to German news outlet NTV, the driver only needed brief treatment at the scene and was released.
According to NTV, the 61-year-old man was driving the transition from the A8 to the A995 toward Munich around 8 a.m. Saturday morning. The roadway was wet and, according to the Holzkirchen highway police, he entered the rain-soaked curve at an “inappropriate speed.” His McLaren slid off the road and under a guardrail.
A guardrail can be a lifesaving device that prevents a vehicle from leaving the roadway and hitting a tree or tumbling off a cliff. However, in this case the guardrail nearly had the opposite effect. It kept the car on the road, but it pierced the cabin of the 710-horsepower McLaren. One only needs to glance at the photos of the crash to see how close the guardrail came to hitting the driver.
When first responders arrived on the scene. they reportedly expected to find a much more gravely injured driver. The Brunnthal Fire Department wrote on Facebook that “the first impression made us suspect bad things — but by a miracle the driver was only slightly injured.”
The twin-turbo McLaren was less fortunate; the car appears to have been completely destroyed in the crash. The 720S features a carbon-fiber tub that not only reduces weight and increases rigidity, but also does an excellent job protecting passengers. Thankfully, the driver was the only occupant in the car at the time of the crash... for as stout as the structure of the 720S is, the guardrail appears to have torn right through where a passenger would have been sitting.
Police estimate the damage at over €250,000 ($290,000). A shocking amount of money for sure, but not as shocking as the driver walking away nearly unharmed.
