When Los Angeles Chargers star linebacker Denzel Perryman was pulled over by police recently, he was quickly thrown in jail. The reason for the traffic stop was tame enough: some sort of vehicle code violations were noted by the officers. But things went downhill from there.
Speed record attempt on the Bonneville Salt Flats lead to a shocking death.
The 32-year-old NFL player was originally pulled over on the night of August 1 in Los Angeles. For some reason, police searched the vehicle, and that’s when officers encountered five firearms inside, including two assault rifles, reports ESPN.
California has pretty strict laws about transporting guns in cars or on your person. We don’t know why Perryman was arrested, but we assume it was for allegedly violating a law regarding firearms, earning him a single felony charge.
We also don’t know why on Monday afternoon the professional football player was released from jail after he was held without bond.
All we know is Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman didn’t file criminal charges in court, which led to Perryman’s release. He was supposed to make his first court appearance this morning, but that’s not happening now.
In other words, prosecutors aren’t pursuing whatever police alleged Perryman did. Plus, on his criminal record the stay in jail is reportedly listed as a detention, not an arrest. Interesting.
Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, visited his player in jail on August 3 and said Perryman was upbeat about the whole ordeal.
"Love Denzel," Harbaugh said Monday. "He's always done right. He's never been in trouble. Got a beautiful family, and we'll let the due process play out."
That statement sounds like Harbaugh knew something about the details of the case which meant Perryman would be walking out of custody as a free man. Perhaps one day we’ll learn exactly what transpired on August 1.
