North Jersey was shaken up again on the afternoon of Aug. 5 when a 2.7 magnitude earthquake hit Bergen County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter was in Hillsdale, the government agency said, and the quake occurred at 12:11 p.m.

Local officials and emergency departments quickly took to social media after the earthquake to inform residents of the event.

"Many of our residents reported feeling a quick jolt or hearing a loud thump," wrote Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio in a post on Facebook. "Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries or damage at this time. We understand events like this can be unsettling. Please know the Borough is monitoring the situation and is here to support you if needed."

The Leonia Police Department asks that residents only call 911 for emergencies, writing in a post on Facebook, "The Bergen County Communications Center is receiving multiple calls about the earthquake and it is important to keep the telephone lines clear for emergencies."

This comes just days after an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 hit Bergen County. This quake, which had an epicenter in Hasbrouck Heights, was heard and felt all over the Metro New York area.

However, both quakes are still quite small in comparison to the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in April 2024, rattling everyone from Washington D.C. to Boston and the surrounding areas.
