A well-known gang broke into multiple cars in a Massachusetts mall parking lot in July.
The nationwide gang is known as the “Felony Lane Gang.” Members are known to watch people leave their cars, especially women, without a purse or wallet at parks, beaches, post offices or daycares. The “group of bandits” originating from Fort Lauderdale, Florida more than a decade ago then break into the cars to steal debit and credit cards, Chelsea Groton Bank warned.
The stolen credit cards are sometimes used to buy high end electronics or gift cards. Other times, they use wigs, glasses and hats to cash checks from stolen checkbooks. They use the outside lane of the bank, which got them the name “Felony Lane Gang,” the Hanover Police Department said.
Police said the gang was involved in car break-ins at Merchants Row Mall on July 29. Massachusetts State Police had been following the suspects during this due to other break-ins and they were arrested later that day.
It’s not the first time the gang has hit Massachusetts.
State police were also involved in a fraud case from 2023 in which seven defendants from Florida were sentenced for their roles in an organized fraud and identity theft scheme spanning multiple states. One of the leaders of the scheme was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison.
The Felony Lane Gang Task Force has been working to shut down the gang for years.
The group uses Facebook to help police across the U.S. catch these members of the group, according to USA Today. In about five years, the task force said, it helped law enforcement identify more than 1,500 Felony Lane Gang members.
The Facebook group has identified gang members in Northampton, Springfield, Milford, Belchertown, Ipswich, Monson and more.
