A hiker from Minnesota is missing in the Wyoming wilderness.

The Big Horn County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming said Grant Gardner went missing last week while on a planned, three-day hike through the Misty Moon Lake area.

According to authorities, Gardner summited the 13,000-foot Cloud Peak at around 7 p.m. on July 29 and was preparing to head to a lower elevation for the night.

"A text sent to his wife at the summit indicated the climb was more taxing than he expected and he was tired," the sheriff's office said.

Gardner has not been heard from since, according to law enforcement, which began search and rescue operations after they were notified on Aug. 1 of his disappearance.

"The late summit of 7:00pm at 13,000 feet was and is concerning due to the lack of visible trails through cliffs, timber line, boulder fields, and other hazards that had to be navigated after dark before reaching clear trails and safe terrain," the sheriff's office wrote in an update Tuesday afternoon.

Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn said in a news release that search and rescue teams from multiple agencies and the Wyoming Army National Guard have encountered "extreme and very challenging" conditions during the search. At least people have required medical care during the search.

"At this time our hearts go out the family," Blackburn wrote. "We are asking for your thoughts and prayers on their behalf, and for the searchers who are risking life safety in this beautiful but unforgiving wilderness area."

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who may have had contact with Gardner to call 307-568-2324 or report it through the Wyoming Missing Person tip line.
