KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There will be a new elementary school opening in North Kansas City for the 2025-26 school year.

The North Kansas City School District announced the opening of their new school, Greenway Elementary.

First day of classes will be on Aug. 19. The school mascot, Ollie the Otter, will be present to greet students on their first day.

The new school combines Lakewood and Winnwood Elementary into one campus. Both schools were over 60 years old and required significant repairs.

“This new school will provide a space where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Greenway was designed with every student in mind,” Greenway Principal Dr. Margaret Helwig said.

Some students already had the chance to tour the new building during the summer school.

Greenway has a backdrop of woods and lake so they can integrate nature into the school’s design.

It also consists of “learning neighborhoods” themed around water elements such as rivers, oceans, and waterfalls. The school will include spaces for Pre-K and special education students.

The building has enhanced security features and a media center with a reading nook and tinker space. There is also an outdoor learning space including a deck, raised garden beds and a storybook walk which encourages hands-on exploration and environmental awareness.

The school is located at 4624 N Norton Ave., at the former Lakewood Elementary site.
