A beloved Shrewsbury Firefighter died on Aug. 2 with family by his side from job-related cancer.
Walter J. “Wally” Wagner, Jr., 70, was born in Worcester but raised and educated in Shrewsbury. He spent 25 years being a firefighter for the town.
Wagner also enjoyed fishing, visiting the casino “and sitting at his picnic table, where he was able to chat with friends, or anyone who happened to see him and stop by and share a Miller Lite together,” his obituary read.
“Above all, Wally’s life was fulfilled by being surrounded by family and friends, which always made him so happy,” the obituary read. “He will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and his sayings – his favorite being ‘Do the whole thing!’
His death is considered a line of duty death from occupational cancer, the fire department said.
People are invited to visit with the Wagner family from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral home, located at 648 Main St. in Shrewsbury. There will be a uniformed walked through at the wake.
Wagner’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8 at St. Anne’s Church, which is located at 130 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury.
Instead of flowers, the family is asking donations to be made to Shrewsbury Fire and Police Relief Association or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
