(WHTM) — Jobless claims increased in Pennsylvania last week.
The U.S. Department of Labor reported 9,844 new unemployment insurance claims in the state for the week of August 2. That’s an increase by 375 claims from the previous week.

Figures increased nationwide by 7,000 from the previous week to 226,000 new claims.
The department also reported an increase by 38,000 people to the number of continuing jobless claims in the country as of July 26, bringing the total to 1,974,000 — the highest since November 2021 during the pandemic.
Jobless claims are seen as a proxy for layoffs.

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate still remains below the national average after growing slightly in June to 4%. The state’s Department of Labor and Industry will release July figures on August 15.
