One of only 34 early Series I BMW 507s heads to Broad Arrow Monterey with a storied past and full restoration.

A remarkably rare 1957 BMW 507 Series I Roadster will cross the block at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Monterey Jet Center sale on August 14, offering collectors a shot at one of the most exclusive postwar BMWs ever built. Estimated to sell between $1.8 million and $2.2 million, this matching-numbers example, chassis number 70010, is one of just 34 early Series I models produced during the brief 252-unit run of the legendary 507 between 1956 and 1959.

Finished in Ivory when completed at BMW’s Munich plant in February 1957, this Series I car was originally delivered through a dealership in Duisburg, Germany. Its known U.S. history begins in the early 1970s in northern Ohio, where it caught the eye of enthusiast Richard Margolis. Margolis acquired the car in 1978 for $10,000 and embarked on what became a multi-decade, photo-documented restoration journey.

The restoration—spread over more than two decades—culminated in 2002 with the car resplendent in red over a black leather interior. Margolis’ meticulous efforts earned the car a perfect 100-point score at an Ohio BMW club event and an appearance as a featured “Car of the Century” at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. In 2004, the roadster passed to its current owner, joining an elite collection in upstate New York that includes Duesenbergs, Bugattis, and coachbuilt Mercedes.

This 507 has since continued to live an active life, appearing at the Colorado Grand, Greenwich Concours, and other prestigious events. Included with the sale are the BMW Certificate, original correspondence with BMW, pre-restoration photos, and an engine compartment toolkit.

With its rarity, heritage, and well-preserved restoration, this Series I 507 remains a standout opportunity for collectors seeking both provenance and usability in a postwar classic. See it here.
