Live updates: Trump’s peace deal deadline for Putin arrives; Texas redistricting standoff escalates

As President Trump’s deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived Friday, the prospect of the leaders meeting in person to discuss terms of a peace deal with Ukraine is still dangling as a possibility for next week.

When asked Thursday by reporters if the deadline was still standing, the president said, “We’re going to see what he has to say. That’s going to be up to him.”

Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin in recent months as Russia pounds Ukraine despite U.S. calls for a pause in the fighting. Much is still unknown about the meeting, including when, where — and even whether — it will happen. Here are five questions looming over a potential summit.

In Texas, the state House will again try to hold a session at quorum, but Democrats are not expected to be in Austin, continuing their protest against redistricting the state to give Republicans five more seats in Congress.

Republicans on Thursday got the cooperation of the FBI in tracking down Texas lawmakers who have fled the state. Democrats who have decamped to California will hold a press conference at 5 p.m. with fellow Democrats, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
