A recent restaurant study on breakfast trends in 2025 shows Ohioans are very generous to their servers.
The average tip in Ohio is 20.6%, according to data from Toast, a point-of-sale platform for restaurants and retail. Toast's Q1 2025 Restaurant Trends Report provides "insight into the state of the U.S. restaurant industry" by analyzing data from about 140,000 restaurants that are part of the Toast platform.
Toast's report on the price of omelets and other breakfast trends also includes a section on the state of tipping in America. In that, Ohio ranks highly and is one of the best-tipping states in the nation.
Here's what to know.
What are the best states for tipping? Ohio is in the top 5
According to Toast's data, tips at full-service restaurants rose to 19.4% in Q1 2025 from 19.3% in Q4 2024. Full-service tipping had been flat for the three previous quarters. At quick-service restaurants, tipping rates remained flat at 15.8% in Q1 2025 compared to Q4 2024.
Ohio was beat both of those averages by healthy margins, tipping an average of 21.1% at full-service restaurants and 17.7% at quick-service ones. The state's average for total tips is 20.6%, per Toast.
Delaware was the top state in the nation for tipping for the second consecutive quarter, averaging 22.1% in Q1 2025, up from 21.9% in Q4 2024. California was at the bottom of the list, averaging 17.3% in Q1 2025, the same as in Q3 and Q4 2024.
The top states for total tipping are:
Delaware: 22.1%
West Virginia: 21.0%
New Hampshire: 20.9%
Indiana: 20.7%
Ohio: 20.6%
Data on tipping rates comes from applicable restaurants on the Toast platform where a tip was added to the order via a card or digital payment. Cash tips and transactions without tips are not included in the analysis.
Bird flu affecting omelet prices and other breakfast trends
Toast's report also details breakfast trends, including how the price of eggs is driving up the cost of omelets. The average price of omelets grew 5.4% year-over-year to $14.71 in April 2025. Toast attributes that increase to the avian influenza outbreak, which has caused "significant egg price volatility." Millions of hens were killed because of the outbreak, leading to an egg shortage, which is driving up prices.
In Ohio, an omelet will cost you $12.60 on average, up 5% year over year. That price is among the lowest in the nation, per Toast.
In other breakfast trends, Mondays are becoming more popular for ordering breakfast out, with transactions growing 7% from the previous year. Breakfast takeout grew 4%, and delivery grew 15%, though it is still the least popular way to get breakfast from a restaurant, Toast notes.
