While many are shocked at this revelation, this sort of thing is more common that most people would believe. Many will just assume the guys who were caught on surveillance footage stealing the Chevy were the same ones riding in it.
But police can’t make those sorts of assumptions and build a case for the fatal hit and run. Whoever was driving the Camaro hit a trailer being towed by a shuttle bus, causing a chain reaction. Ultimately, four people were killed and many others were hospitalized, some with serious injuries.
When vehicles are stolen, sometimes the thieves will turn around and sell them for cheap. They might offer some falsified temporary tags or something like that, but the transaction is all about getting quick money.
The people who buy what are obviously stolen rides are oftentimes criminals as well. This is why police can’t be certain about who was in the muscle car. Hopefully investigators can figure out the identity of those two men and bring them to justice.
Camaros have become big targets for thieves lately, thanks to a security vulnerability theft rings have learned to exploit.
This tragic situation is one of many reasons why car theft is a problem for everyone, not just the people who have their ride stolen. Boosted vehicles are often used in the commission of other crimes, including violent ones like armed robberies and carjackings.
Doing what you can to secure your car is always a good move. That can include aftermarket pre-ignition systems, alarms, and GPS trackers to recover it if it is stolen.
