KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sunday morning storms brought a flood watch and heavy rains to the Kansas City area, and some even saw damage.
In the Northland, a tree branch that fell on a power line sparked a small fire. The Kansas City Fire Department was on scene as the rain moved out of the Kansas City Metro around noon.
In Merriam, a downed tree fell into Alan Gordon’s yard.

“I heard a tree cracking and I looked out the window. The tree fell on my garage,” he said.
“It seemed to basically brush against my garage and not destroy anything, hopefully.”
The part of the tree that fell also brought down power lines, one of which was lying on the property next to Gordon’s.
“The powerline’s down near the chain link fence. The neighbors down the way still have power. So, I’m worried about their power line being hot.”
FOX4 Meteorologist Alex Countee says that the heavy rains that we’ve experienced this summer are due to a jet stream that has continued to bring moisture from the Pacific Northwest into Kansas and Missouri.
“So, it just kind of depends on how exactly that jet stream is shaped,” he said.
“And if it stays in that formation and stays in that shape for a long period of time, that’s kind of what we noticed, that’s kind of amplified our opportunities for heavy rains.”

As more rain is expected in the early part of the week, Countee says that we’re not the only ones who have received more rain than usual.
“In late July, early August, the National Weather Service had already issued more than 500 flash flood warnings this summer,” Countee said.
“We’ve never had those kinds of back to back to back to back to back flash flood events in one season.”
