As students return to school in Florida, some might be missing summertime and already looking forward to the next day off from school.

Luckily for them, the next time students get school off and the first observed holiday of the 2025-26 school year is less than a month away.

Labor Day, which falls on Monday, Sept. 1, is celebrated on the first Monday of September each year and provides students with the first long weekend of the school year.

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September each year.

The annual holiday celebrates the contributions and social and economic achievements of the American workforce.

"The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

How long is Labor Day weekend 2025?

Labor Day weekend is a three-day weekend for Florida students, as schools are closed in observance of the holiday on Monday, Sept. 1.

What holidays do Florida schools observe in 2025-26?

In Florida, these holidays are universally observed across districts during the 2025-26 school year, according to the Florida Department of Education:

  • Labor Day: Sept. 1, 2025

  • Martin Luther King Jr's birthday: Jan. 19, 2026

  • Memorial Day: May 25, 2026

Whether students have Columbus Day (Oct. 13), Veterans' Day (Nov.11), Presidents' Day (Feb. 16) and Good Friday (April 3) off from school depends on the Florida school district, according to FLDOE. See which district observes each holiday here.

Here's when breaks are for Duval, Nassau, Clay and St. Johns students:

  • Thanksgiving/fall break: Duval County Schools are closed Nov. 26 through Nov. 28. Schools are closed Nov. 24 through Nov. 28 for Clay, Nassau and St. Johns.

  • Christmas/winter break: St. Johns County students are off starting Dec. 22 and return Jan. 5, 2026, while Clay and Nassau County students return Jan. 6, 2026. Duval County students are off from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2, 2026, though Jan. 5 and 6 are Employee Planning Days, so no school for students those days either.

  • Spring break: Duval, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns County students are off starting March 16, 2026 and return March 20. In Duval and Clay, Monday, March 23 is a planning day and students get the day off.

The National Center for Education Statistics says the minimum amount of instruction time for Florida students is 180 days, equating to 720 hours for K-3 and 900 hours for Grades 4-12.
