SOMERSET, Ky. (FOX 56) — It’s been nearly three months since a deadly tornado ripped through Southern Kentucky. Since then, communities have rallied around each other to begin rebuilding.

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Somerset received extensive damage, completely destroying the sanctuary.

Pastor Doug Couch said they immediately began working to salvage the 50 years of memories inside their four walls.

“There’s history, there’s mementos, those kinds of things that get lost. But ultimately, we have to put our fixation on things behind us, and move forward,” he explained. “You can either quit or you can go forward. You, there’s really no choice.”

Couch said they have also faced struggles getting assistance from FEMA; however, they are making progress on their efforts to get funding to rebuild.

“We kind of raised a stink over that rattled some cages. And we ended up getting both some national and local statewide attention about that,” he said. “FEMA’s stepped up, got to the problem, corrected it, and they’re walking us through the reapplication process now.”

He said as the months and years go by, the church congregation will remain strong.

Couch said they have upcoming events to raise money towards recovery.
